Registration
Once you have decided what test you want to take, the following information will help you in registering for, and taking the tests.
* Note: As of January 5 2009, you are now able to register for Lotus, WebSphere Portal, IBM Workplace and Cognos tests at prometric.com/ibm.
Visit the Prometric Web site to locate our Authorized Prometric Test Center, and register for the exam. Before registering for the test, be prepared to provide the following information:
- Name
- Candidate / Testing Identification number (If this is your first time to register for a certification exam, a number will be assigned.)
- Phone number
- Fax number
- Mailing address
- Billing address (if needed)
- Test number
- Method of payment
- Company name
- Contact the vendor of your choice and specify the time and location most convenient for you.
Payment and Confirmation
Payment and confirmation procedures vary by testing vendor. In general, if you pay by credit card, you can immediately schedule your test. If you pay by check, you will need to wait until it is received and payment is confirmed. If time permits, you will be sent a letter of confirmation with instructions about the test date, time, and location. If you register within 48 hours of the test date, you will not receive a letter.
Take the test
All IBM certification tests are closed book, and are administered on a personal computer. Tests generally contain more than 75 questions and take between one and two hours to complete.
Rescheduling and Cancellations
- Examinees who wish to cancel an exam and receive a refund must cancel 48 hours before the scheduled exam.
- Examinees must call the Contact/Registration Center (+ 603-7628- 3333) to receive a refund.
- Examinees wishing to reschedule or cancel their appointments must do so by 7:00 p.m. Central Time, one business day before the scheduled testing time. For example, to cancel an exam scheduled for a Monday, an examinee must do so by 7:00 p.m. on the Friday before the Monday appointment. Messages left on answering machines after hours, on weekends or on holidays are not acceptable.
Test Retake Policy
The same certification test may be taken only two times within a 30 day period. If a certification exam is not completed successfully on the first attempt, there is no waiting requirement before taking the test a second time. However, candidates may not take the same test more than twice within any 30 day period of time. Additionally, retakes are not allowed after the successful completion of an exam.
A test result found to be in violation of the retake policy will not be processed, which will result in no credit awarded for the test taken. Repeat violators will be banned from participation in the IBM Professional Certification Program.
Score Reports
|
You will receive a full score report with section analyses at the conclusion of the test. Be sure to keep the score report as documentation of the test completion. When you pass a test, no further action is needed on your part. Your result will automatically be sent to IBM for processing. If you are not successful, you may register to take the test again later.
Once your certification is awarded, your certificate will be sent to you via e-mail (or you will be sent instructions on how to retrieve the certificate from the Certification Member Site, if this is the first certification for this candidate/testing ID). Please ensure that IBM has your current e-mail address on file by keeping your profile up to date. You can manage this yourself by selecting "Address Information" from within the Certification Member Site.
You may be interested in ordering a premium certificate from the IBM Certification estore. Each premium hardcopy certificate is accompanied by a new wallet card which displays your name and certification title, demonstrating your status as an IBM Certified Professional.

For information about the function provided by the Certification Member Site, as well as instructions on how to register, please review About the Member Site.
Note: After a test has been taken, your demographic data (including name, address, phone number, etc.) and test results are automatically sent from the testing vendor to IBM for processing within 5 working days.
Preparation First, select the certification you would like to pursue and review the certification description. You may already be prepared to take the required test(s), based on previous education, experience, or your current job skills. However, to make the most of your expertise, you may want to take advantage of the resources described below. |
 |
1. Test Objectives
Test objectives describe the topics covered on the test and can be viewed from both the Test information page, as well as the certification description page for the associated certification
2. Sample/Assessment Tests
Sample Tests simply acquaint you with the format of a test and the type of questions that may be presented. Answer keys are provided. A Sample Test should not be used to determine whether you are ready to take a test -- this should be done through an Assessment Test. Sample tests can be viewed from the Test information page.
Assessment tests simulate the actual certification exam, and help you determine whether or not you would benefit from further study prior to sitting for the certification exam. If an assessment test is provided for a particular certification exam, a link to it is provided from the certification description page for which that exam is a requirement.
Like the actual test, an assessment test:
- has the same duration.
- contains questions requiring single and multiple answers. For multiple-answer questions, you need to choose all required options to get the answer correct. You will be advised how many options make up the correct answer.
- provides a Examination Score Report which informs the test taker how he or she did on each section of the test. This feedback correlates back to the test objectives found on this Web site in the test information pages for each test. To maintain the integrity of each assessment test, questions and answers are not distributed.
3. Recommended training resources
The recommended training resources for a test can be viewed from both the Test information page, as well as the certification description page for the associated certification. The following types of education may be offered for a test:
- IBM and independent training companies may offer courses to help prepare you for certification. For information on course schedules, locations, and prices, please call the training vendor or visit their Internet site.
- Self-study books are available for some certifications. These books help you prepare for certification at your own pace and are typically designed to be used as ongoing reference material.
- Other reference materials may also be available to help you prepare for certification. This information may be in the form of IBM reference manuals, product manuals, independently published books, or other materials.
Special Accommodations
Special testing accommodations are provided in conformance with established standards:
- In the United States, IBM conforms to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (link resides outside of ibm.com) of 1990.
- In other countries, they accommodate candidates in compliance with local law
