During
September, USEFP was busy in the selection of
Fulbright and Humphrey grantees for next year. The
interview process was completed and the online
applications were submitted on
October 1. Congratulations to all those
selected! The process was extremely competitive
and many excellent candidates have been encouraged
to reapply next year. The last of the 2011 Fulbrighters departed for their universities in
the U.S., with USEFP arranging
their travel and everything else needed to
give them a good start. In October, this batch
attended a dedicated Gateway Orientation organized
by the Institute of International Education (IIE)
at the University of Texas in Austin. A highlight
of the five-day orientation was meeting Texas
Senator Judith Zaffirini at the State Capitol.
Also in October, USEFP hosted the 8th Annual Fulbright
and Humphrey Alumni Conference. Held at the Serena Hotel in Islamabad on
October 7 – 9, the conference theme was “Giving
Back: The Role of Alumni in the Socio-economic
Development of Pakistan.” The conference was inaugurated by
Mr. Thomas Miller,
Minister
Counselor for Public Affairs and Mr. Mitchell
Moss, Counselor for Public Affairs both from the
U.S. Embassy and Mr. Ismail Hassan Niazi, Chairman USEFP Board of
Directors. Mrs. Souriya Anwar, President of SOS
Children’s Villages Pakistan gave an inspirational
keynote address. U.S. Ambassador Cameron Munter
and his wife Dr. Marilyn Wyatt hosted a dinner
reception for the conference participants. The
conference gave alumni an opportunity to highlight
their social service work in child welfare,
women’s empowerment, sustainable development,
health reforms, and regional stability. Humphrey
alumnus Dr. Amjad Saqib, was given special
recognition for his work with Akhuwat
Foundation as Executive Director.
