Program Summary

The Professional Development Program for Indian and Pakistani Teachers, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, will introduce teachers of English to current best practices in teaching English. This initiative will provide opportunities to 13 secondary school Indian and 13 secondary school Pakistani teachers of English (9th to 12th grades). Teachers selected for this Professional Development Program will spend 6 weeks (June 26 – August 5, 2007) participating in an Institute at UCLA (including three days in Washington, D.C.) learning advanced methodologies for teaching English, exploring the latest technologies applied to teaching and learning, and developing a deeper awareness of U.S. culture and society, particularly gender and ethnic relationship issues. These teachers will also participate in a four-month distance learning program after they return to Pakistan and India. They will also attend and present at two follow-on workshops, one in Pakistan and the other in India, of approximately 3 - 4 days each in the months of November 2007 and January 2008. UCLA is one of the premier institutions of higher education in the United States. UCLA’s Department of Education is regularly judged to be the best among public universities. University Extension at UCLA is one of the nation's leaders in online learning and American Language instruction.

• Gain exposure to U.S. teachers, students, and classrooms

• Develop leadership and training skills

 The project will provide:

• Round-trip economy airfare for the participant
• Lodging and meals for the six-week Professional Development Program
• A Professional Development Program materials allowance
• Medical insurance coverage as per U.S. Government guidelines

 To Be Eligible You Must:

• Hold a bachelor’s degree 
• Have three or more years experience as a full-time secondary school English teacher (9^th-12^th  class)
• Demonstrate a willingness to provide leadership in your schools and schools in your area
• Demonstrate English language competence

 Authority Support

• Provide evidence from school authorities that you can obtain a leave of absence
• Provide a letter from your principal giving permission for you to provide future training to other English teachers
• Have the written permission of your principal to participate fully

 Citizenship

• Be a citizen of Pakistan and not a U.S. dual national
• Be qualified to obtain/hold a valid Pakistani passport by January 30, 2007 that is valid until Feb. 2008

 Personal Qualifications

• Be present in Pakistan when submitting the application and for an interview
• Be in good health
• Be willing to share a room with a same-sex colleague

Short-listed candidates will be notified of the results of the screening and selection. If you are not notified by 15 April, 2007, you may assume you have not been accepted.
