Registration Procedures

Follow the five steps below to register online:

Step One: Select the exam center and application
Check the list of computer-based testing centers by clicking on 'Locate a Testing Center' on Prometric's SOA/CAS/CIA Web Site. Candidates may submit a hard copy CBT application or register online.

Step Two
All applications must arrive at Preliminary Actuarial Exams/SOA Office by the registration deadline listed in the chart above in the “Exam Dates and Deadlines” section. No late applications will be accepted. Candidates will be registered on a first come first serve basis; candidates will be notified if their applications are not accepted.

Important Note: Candidates are required to bring a government-

issued photo ID to the CBT center (see Step Five-A below). It is critical that the name you enter on your application form should match the same form of your name as it appears on your government issued photo ID. Do not change the spelling and do not change the order of your name. If you use an initial or middle name on your government-issued photo ID, be sure to include that as well. Discrepancies in names may prevent the candidates from testing.

Step Three: Receive confirmation
After your registration has been processed, you will receive an automatic acknowledgement letter by e-mail that includes your unique candidate/eligibility number for this administration. The candidate/eligibility number included on the automated acknowledgement will NOT be activated immediately. Once the number has been activated, SOA will e-mail you a letter of confirmation. At that time, you should schedule your exam appointment IMMEDIATELY upon receipt of your confirmation (see Step Four for details).

Step Four: IMMEDIATELY schedule an appointment at a CBT center
You may schedule online or by telephone as follows:

Schedule Online with Prometric
Scheduling online is the most efficient method and candidates are encouraged to schedule their test appointments online as follows:

After receiving their confirmations with candidate/eligibility numbers, candidates may schedule their test appointments on the internet by going to www.Prometric.com/SOA. The system allows candidates access to real-time scheduling 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Canadian, international and U.S. candidates are able to select their preferred testing date from the available window. The opening page for scheduling your appointment will appear. The specific exam name is listed below:

For Exam P/1
The name is “Probability Test (English) - P1ENL” for U.S. and all non-Canadian sites.

In Canada, the exam name is “Probability Test (French/English for Canada) - P1FRL.” This exam is viewed in English with French translation.

For Exam FM/2
The name is “Financial Mathematics Test (English) - FM2EN” for U.S. and all non-Canadian sites.

In Canada, the exam name is “Financial Mathematics Test (French/English for Canada) - FM2FR.” This exam is viewed in English with French translation.

For Exam C/4
The name is “Construction & Evaluation of Actuarial Models (English) – C4EN” for U.S. and all non-Canadian sites.

Note to Candidates with Special Needs: Only candidates who have already received approval for special accommodation from the SOA Office may schedule an appointment that includes special accommodations. Candidates requiring special needs accommodations may not make an appointment on the Internet but should call the Special Accommodations Department at Prometric to schedule their examination.

NOTE: A $35 rescheduling fee must be paid directly to Prometric if the test is rescheduled between 30 days and 49 hours of the appointment.

Schedule by Telephone
After receiving their confirmations with candidate/eligibility numbers, candidates may schedule their test appointments by calling Prometric's Candidate Services Contact Center. To schedule their appointments, candidates must reference the "SOA/CAS/CIA" exam. Consult the list of telephone numbers for the Candidate Services Contact Centers. This information can also be found at www.Prometric.com/SOA selecting Contact Us and then selecting over the phone from the Test Takers section of the page. Then, select the region you wish to contact. Select Professional Licensure as the area of study or certification. Next, look on the page displayed for the telephone number of the Prometric Call Center in your region.

Candidates requiring Special Needs Accommodations should call the Special Accommodations Department at Prometric to schedule their test appointments.

Step Five: Calculator Policy for exam day
Only the following models of Texas Instruments calculators are approved:
  • BA-35
  • BA II Plus
  • BA II Plus Professional
  • TI-30Xa
  • TI-30X II (IIS solar or IIB battery)

No other calculators will be provided for those who fail to bring an approved model. Candidates may bring more than one calculator into the examination room, provided each calculator is on the approved list.

Mail/Fax Registration
Please register by mail or fax, if:
  1. you are paying by check; and/or
  2. you are an approved participant in our international discount program.

Application forms for Exams P, FM and C are available on BeAnActuary.org.

Application forms for all other exams and requirements are available on the home page for each exam/requirement.

How to CHANGE or CANCEL a Test Appointment

Candidates may reschedule an appointment before noon of the second business day prior to the scheduled exam. Please note that a candidate cannot reschedule an appointment after noon of the second business day prior to the scheduled exam. For example, to reschedule an exam for Tuesday, the candidate must notify the test center by noon on the Friday before the Tuesday appointment.

To reschedule an appointment, candidates must do one of the following by noon of the second business day before the appointment:

  • Go online to www.prometric.com/SOA to reschedule your exam appointment; or
  • Call the test center where you are scheduled to take the exam. Notification must be left directly with the administrator at the test center. Do NOT leave a message on the answering machine-this does not constitute official notification; or
  • Special needs candidates must call the Special Conditions Coordinator to reschedule or cancel.

NOTE: A $35 rescheduling fee must be paid directly to Prometric if the test is rescheduled between 30 days and 49 hours of the appointment. Exam fees or registrations cannot be transferred from one session to a future session.

Procedure for CANCELING a CBT Appointment

If a candidate wishes to receive a refund, the request must arrive at Preliminary Actuarial Exams at the SOA by the refund deadline listed in the chart above in the “Exam Dates and Deadlines” section (also see “CBT Refund Policy” below) and the candidate must cancel the appointment with Prometric as described below. Please note that a candidate may not cancel an appointment after noon of the second business day prior to the scheduled exam.

To cancel an appointment, candidates must do one of the following by noon of the second business day before the appointment:

  • Go online to www.Prometric.com/SOA to cancel your exam appointment; or
  • Call the test center where you are scheduled to take the exam. Notification must be left directly with the administrator at the test center. Do NOT leave a message on the answering machine-this does not constitute official notification; or
  • Special needs candidates must call the Special Conditions Coordinator to reschedule or cancel.

A cancellation does not automatically ensure a refund. If a candidate fails to arrive for a scheduled appointment or cancels without giving the required notice as described above, no refund will be given. Exam fees or registration cannot be transferred from one session to a future session.

CBT Refund Policy

Any candidate who submits an application for an exam by CBT, has scheduled an appointment at a prometric test center, and decides not to take the examination may receive a refund from the SOA (less the $100 administrative fee) only by doing both of the following:

  • Cancel the appointment by noon of the second business day (includes Saturdays) before the test appointment. For example, to cancel an examination for Tuesday, a candidate must notify the test center by noon on the Friday before the Tuesday appointment.
  • Cancel your order at www.soa.org (click on the “View My Account” button, then select “View Order History,” enter your user name and password, and select the order you wish to cancel; click the cancellation button to submit your refund request) by the refund deadline listed in the chart above in the “Exam Dates and Deadlines” section. Examination fee refunds will be issued following the testing administration.

Any candidate who has NOT scheduled an appointment with Prometric may receive a refund (less the $100 administrative fee) by submitting a refund request online at www.soa.org(“View My Account”) or by e-mail cbtrefund@soa.org. The $100 Administrative fee will also be applied to orders with balance due.

Note to candidates who have already set an appointment with Prometric:
Any refund request submitted later than the refund deadline, or a refund request submitted without the appointment being cancelled will not be considered.

Exam fees cannot be transferred from one session to a future session. On test day, if a candidate is in violation of any of the check in policies regarding valid government issued photo IDs and is not admitted, the exam fee will not be refunded.

For all other exams:
SOA refund policy for 2010 is as follows:

Refund requests for candidates who wish to cancel their exam application must be received by the day before the specified exam session begins.

For Example: The Spring 2010 session begins April 30. This means all refund requests for all exams must be in by April 29.

A $100 (U.S.) administrative fee is assessed on all refunds. Note: the administrative fee will be charged on any registrations resulting in a returned check or declined credit card, even in the event of a cancellation.

You may request a refund by going to SOA Web site, clicking on My Account, then View Order History or e–mail refund@soa.org. All requests must be received by the deadline date. Change–of–center fees will not be refunded.

CBT Exam Scoring

For Exams P/1 and FM/2
An unofficial pass/fail result will be displayed on the computer screen at the conclusion of the examination. A printed copy of the candidate’s unofficial pass/fail result will be available upon completion of the computer-based test.

For Exam C/4 When an exam is first offered by CBT, immediate pass/fail results will not be available for the first few administrations. Grades for Exam C/4 will be released approximately eight weeks after the test window closes.

Reporting of Examination Results

The official examination results will be available via the SOA's Online Transcript Access, usually eight to ten weeks after the examination date. About one week later, a list of the names of passing candidates for the examination session is made available through the SOA exam results Web page.

Confidentiality of Examination Records

The fact that a candidate has passed an examination for credit with the SOA is considered public knowledge. Any further information about the examinations taken or grades received by a candidate is available only to that candidate and to Education Committee Officers as required for Committee purposes. However, a candidate may request in writing to the SOA office that a designated person or institution should receive such information.

The candidate authorizes and consents to the Society using and disclosing (including, but not limited to, disclosing to the third–party contractors and service–providers of the Society) personally identifiable information about the candidate as necessary and appropriate for the purposes of registering the candidate for the exam, conducting the exam, determining the results of the exam, and communicating with the candidate regarding the results of the exam.
