:: Fulbright Visiting Specialists Program: Direct Access to the Muslim World

Program Description
This Program will support visits to the U.S. of between three and six weeks. Visiting Specialists will be engaged in intensive lecturing and public outreach programs at U.S. colleges and universities on issues related to Islamic civilization and today’s muslim world for the Academic Year 2008/09.

Eligibility of Applicants
The Fulbright Program does not require that scholars be of any particular religion, i.e. applicants do not need to be Muslim by faith. However, all applicants should be trained in fields related to Islamic thought, cultures or societies. Applicants must have a proven history of teaching, a good understanding of U.S. higher education, fluent English skills and attained mid-to-senior level of professorship or career achievement. Former Fulbright scholars are especially encouraged to apply. Former participants of this program are not eligible. U.S. citizens or permanent residents are not eligible. Also ineligible are persons with a dual U.S./Pakistan nationality or who have a spouse, fiancé, parent or child over 18 years of age who is a US citizen or permanent resident. Employees of the Fulbright organization or the U.S. Department of State are ineligible.

Applicants may specify a host institution. However, the Fulbright Program reserves the right to assign the successful applicants to host institutions it considers most appropriate.

The program does not support the teaching of languages or research projects.


The Application:

An application consists of:

  1. Download Visiting Specialist Application Form
  2. A two-to-three page letter of interest, maximum six-page resume/curriculum vitae which includes your academic training, courses that you have recently taught and major publications.

Important Information:

1. The data page asks for brief biographical details. Please be sure to fill this out fully and clearly.

2. The letter of interest should include:
Your interest and motivation in wishing to participate in a program of lecturing and/or curriculum and program development, and community outreach in the U.S.

The types of short courses or lecture topics on which you are prepared to speak, such as society, culture, arts related to Islam, that would be suitable for general academic or community audiences. Also provide more specialized subjects that would be more appropriate to a limited audience (for example, students or faculty within a particular discipline). This list should be supported by your academic and/or professional expertise.

Past experience in the U.S. or elsewhere that has prepared you to speak to audiences or teach in the U.S. and to contribute to better mutual understanding between the peoples in the U.S. and those in your home country.

How you will benefit personally and professionally from this experience and how you will use the experience in your home institution and community upon your return.

3. The resume/curriculum vitae should include a list of your educational and professional credentials, classes that you have recently taught that relate to Islam or its culture/civilization, published articles, and major conferences at which you presented papers. Please translate the titles of articles and conferences into English. Please list your most recent positions and accomplishments first, and take note that resumes/CVs will not be read beyond the sixth page.

4. Applicants may specify a U.S. host institution; however, the Fulbright Program reserves the right to assign successful applicants to the particular host institutions that it deems most appropriate. 

Once the applications have been submitted and reviewed, the Fulbright offices will inform applicants whether or not they are nominated for the scholar roster. The recommended applicants remain on the roster for five years.

Or you may post the application to USEFP, P.O. Box 1128, Islamabad 44000. Please write the name of the program clearly on the envelope.
