Program | Alumni | Advising | Testing USEFP

May 30, USEFP was honored with a visit by Ms. Tara D. Sonenshine, Under Secretary Public Diplomacy, U.S. Department of State. Ms. Sonenshine met with USEFPs Board of Directors, USEFP staff, and a selection of alumni from USEFP-administered programs. She was accompanied by Deputy Assistant Secretary Mr. James Moore, who was making his second visit to USEFP.

Regular business during May and June centered on pre-departure orientations (PDO) for the Community College Initiative, Global Ugrad, and Fulbright Student Programs. Around 180 Masters and PhD Fulbrighters were given a send-off at the Serena Hotel on July 5-6 this year, making it the largest cohort USEFP has ever sent. Ambassador Richard A. Hoagland, Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy, along with other U.S. Embassy staff came to congratulate the departing students. The highlight was a performance by current PhD grantee Shahram Azhar (of the band Laal). The PDO season kicked of with the Community College Initiative PDO on May 31. A highlight was the presentation by Visiting Fulbright Specialist Robert Mercer from Cypress Community College in California. On July 18-19, 90 Global Ugrads attended their PDO in Islamabad. PDOs were held for grantees of many other programs as well. The largest of the non-student programs orientations this summer was held on June 21, attended by 40 public secondary school English teachers selected for the Teaching Excellence and Achievement (TEA) program.

USEFP also held a series of pre-departure orientations for independent applicants to U.S. colleges and universities from June 25 July 3 in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. The News Education Expo in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad gave 7,000 visitors a chance to visit USEFP stalls to learn about higher education and scholarship opportunities in the U.S.

The Humphrey Alumni Association of Pakistan (HAAP) elected a new President, Mr. Shakel Ahmad, Vice President Mr. Ismail Hassan Niazi and General Secretary, Mr. Abdul Qadir Memon. USEFP looks forward to working closely with them and thanks HAAPs outgoing president Dr. Iqbal Reza for his incredible support and service. Fulbright Alumni Chapters in Peshawar, Karachi, Islamabad and Multan also held elections. A new chapter was established in Faisalabad and office bearers were elected as well. Congratulations to our new office holders! And thanks to the outgoing officers for their service too!

In association with award-winning filmmaker Mian Adnan, who studied at Chapman University in Los Angeles on a Fulbright Masters grant, USEFP has been running monthly movie nights at its office in Islamabad. Everyone is invited. In addition to alumni, students and faculty from NUML, NUST, NDU, QAU and FJWU have attended.
